SAMPERI'S (SANDBERG'S) STORY |
| |

At the turn of the 20th century, Samperi was a powerful man in Finnish Lapland.
In 1988, we announced a competition to find a new name for the Savukoski hotel
and activity centre. The winner was "Samperin Savotta" (literally, Sandberg's
logging project).
The name dates back to Mr Hugo Richard Sandberg, the forest manager at the Kemi
Paper Company, who lived in Savukoski in the early 20th century. As his name was
hard to pronounce, the locals used to call him "Samperi" or "Old Man Samperi".
Samperi was a legend of his times. A famous bear hunter, he was a rough and
temperamental character. He launched his legendary felling project by importing
two massive caterpillar-tracked steam engines from America for use in logging.
One of the two 20-tonne beasts is still on display in Tulppio, Savukoski.
